School Reopening Safety Plans & Policies
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
It is the intention for Christ the King Preparatory Academy to re-open for school attendance of its students and staff beginning on Thursday, September 3, 2020 and for staff on Tuesday, September 1, 2020 for training and development day. It is our hope to conduct in-person instruction for the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. We recognize that during the COVID-19 Pandemic, there are many variables and changes at any time. Our school will be prepared to shift to another form of teaching, should the need arise such as a hybrid model or remote in the case of a mandated school shut down by the NYS Governor.

Re-Opening Plan
CAPACITY
All classes from grades K-12 will receive in-person instruction during the 2020-2021 school year. Requirements for social distancing, PPE, and feasibility will be followed. Classroom sizes will not exceed 6-8 students per classroom.
Preschool, if offered, will only operate in-person with no more than 5 students in the classroom, 3 days a week (half or full day), to allow for appropriate social distancing and sanitizing. Preschool will be offered if there is enrollment of at least 4 students. Preschool re-opening has been a strong consideration for our school. Remote learning did not prove affective for many of the students and staff. It is difficult to teach young children via remote learning due to many factors which must be considered.
SOCIAL DISTANCING
Students and staff will keep 6 ft. of distance between each other at all times. Markings will be placed on the floors and outside of the school building to indicate 6 foot distances. If there are times of distances being closer than 6 ft., sneeze shield walls (PVC clear vinyl) and/or plexi-glass (or acrylic) partitioned movable walls will be utilized as per OSHA guidelines.
Classroom teachers and all staff will be responsible for monitoring their students. Principals shall oversee the staff and students to ensure these protocols are being followed.
COHORTS
Each classroom is its own cohort, with anywhere from 5-10 students in each. At least one adult will be assigned to each group. These groups will stay together the entire school day.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT & FACE COVERINGS
Upon entering the building of Christ the King Preparatory Academy, all individuals will be required to wear a face mask (cloth, paper, surgical, clear mouth view versions), while moving about the building and in classrooms. Students will be permitted to remove face masks during lunch, snack times and instructional time periods as long as they maintain 6 feet of social distancing.

Students will be permitted to remove face masks during lunch, snack times and instructional time periods as long as they maintain 6 feet of social distancing.
- Teachers may wear either face masks (cloth, paper, surgical, clear mouth view versions) with or without face shields during instructional time periods and while in the classroom except for eating. During times of increase numbers of positive COVID-19 test results in the state of NY, teachers may be required to take extra precautions by wearing both face masks and face shields.
- Gloves will be worn by staff members for cleaning, while emptying or handling garbage cans/bags, while assisting a child with food packages or if assisting a sick child. Gloves must be changed after each use for each activity.
- The use of a gown will only be utilized if a child is ill and must be picked up from school.
OPERATIONAL ACTIVITY
Due to the small number of students in each classroom, in-person instruction will be feasible while safeguarding our students and staff from the spread of contagious diseases. Field trips will not be held this school year to avoid outings where a large group of people could congregate. Virtual field trips may be implemented in the classrooms during in-school learning times or can be suggested for remote learning from home. Large group events will also not be held this year such as plays or musicals.

Large group events will also not be held this year such as plays or musicals.
- The typical day for Kindergarten through 8th grade (Preschool) will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
- High School students will attend from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm.
- Students will be allowed in the school building one at a time while others are in designated marked 6ft. spaces.
- Some high school students will be attending the BOCES program. Transportation will be completed by parents, students (with a NYS driver’s license) or a principal.
- Upon entering school and any time a student moves about the room or building (ie, to use the bathroom), face masks will be worn and proper 6 ft. social distancing will be enforced.
- Once students are in their classroom (cohort), they will be seated and wear their masks until instructional time periods begin. Once instruction begins in their partitioned area, masks may be removed to promote adequate oxygen in take.
- During lunch or snack times, masks may be removed to eat and drink.
- School attendance will be 5 days per week. If NYS or Niagara County cases (specifically), begin to increase, high school students may move to hybrid learning with 3 days in school and 2 days learning remotely or vice versa.
- Elementary-middle school students may also move to hybrid learning with 3 days in school and 2 days learning remotely.
- Preschool students may also move from 3 day school weeks to a hybrid model for 2 days in school and 1 day remotely. These days would be opposite the other students to allow for separating groups of students in the building at the same time.
- If circumstances change requiring school buildings to shutdown, remote learning will be implemented.
- Remote learning will include school work to be picked up by students/parents for two week work intervals. Completed work will be dropped off after the two week period is over. This will be done either in person or by submitting assignments electronically (high school students). Electronic submission of work may also be completed for elementary-middle school students should the number of COVID-19 cases increase substantially with stay at home orders in place. Electronic submission includes taking pictures of completed assignments and uploading them to an approved site or by emailing or texting them to a teacher. This will be the decision of each teacher as to which method works the best for them and their students.
- Previously used methods of remote learning which were found to be successful during the pandemic were Google-Duo, FaceTime, Discord, uploaded teaching videos and Zoom. Zoom is appropriate for younger student populations but will not be utilized for older students. Other methods of remote learning tools are being explored for the 2020-2021 school year such as Google Classroom, Flipgrid, etc.
- Training for students and parents will be made available prior to remote learning time periods to allow for a smooth transition from in-person to remote learning.
- If a COVID-19 case develops, the cohort of the student or adult will change to remote learning until all contacts can be identified, notified, tested, and cleared.
- Cleaning and sanitation of the infected area will be completed following NYSDOH and CDC guidelines.
- Contact Tracing: The director and principal of the school will have the responsibility to notify the NYSDOH and the Niagara County Health Department immediately upon being informed of any positive COVID-19 diagnostic test result by any individual within the school or on the grounds.
- The end of the school day will proceed as follows: students from each cohort will be released at staggering times. For example, Preschool students will be dismissed first at 3:00 pm, once all students have vacated the building; the next group will be dismissed, etc.. Special accommodations will be made for students who have appointments requiring specific times to leave. Parents will be encouraged to notify the classroom teacher or principal to inform of the this specific time for pick up to allow the student and teacher ample time to arrange for proper socially distanced exit from school.
Food Services
- Students will bring their own food for lunches and snacks to school. There is a lunchroom area but no cafeteria, therefore, no food will be served.
- There are NO public water fountains in the building. Students and staff will bring their own water bottles to school.
- Students and staff will eat their lunch/snacks in the classroom (cohort) they are assigned maintaining at least a 6 ft. distance unless dividers are in place.
- Food allergies alerts will be noted and posted in each classroom.
- Hand hygiene before and after snacks and lunch will be practiced by having students and staff wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds.
- NO SHARING of snacks, food or drinks will be permitted.
Attendance
The school will be required to collect and report daily teacher/student engagement or attendance regardless of the instructional setting. Flexibility will be considered for monitoring attendance in a remote model.
Educational Neglect
In cases of suspected or observed educational neglect, the school will utilize all strategies possible to assist the parent/guardian in educating their child.
Teaching and Learning
Christ the King Preparatory Academy students will receive academics via the established curriculums used throughout the year. The same curriculum will be utilized if the need for a hybrid model is required with 3 days in school, 2 days at home with homework assigned to home-schooled days. If remote learning is implemented, there will be a 2 week rotational printed schedule with school work sent home (see above in operational activity section for details). This will be in addition to individual student teaching times and classroom videos or teaching to occur via a classroom app.
Teachers often have children at home as well that will need to be taught remotely. Every possible attempt to stay on the scheduled times should be maintained between teachers and parents or arrangements for another scheduled time for the student’s learning. Parents or students will be able to contact teachers regarding learning questions or technology by email or system such as ClassTag or Class Dojo, etc..
Preschool
The preschool room will only have 4-5 students this year maximum. This will allow them to play and spread out safely throughout the day. Preschool students will have special accommodations this year in their classroom such as separate playing areas, socially distanced circle time and learning times and restricted toys per day. The preschool teacher will only place out certain toys the first day, at the end of the day, those toys will be removed from the room to be cleaned and disinfected. The next day, another group of toys will be used and so on. This will reduce the risk of cross contamination. There will be no dress up station or pretend eating area.
Preschool students will not have a circle time rug in their room, rather they will each have their own cleanable mat to sit on which will be placed on an X that will mark spots that are 6 feet apart. Students will also be given a book of the day which will be theirs to read all day but not to share. This could also prove to be an effective way to utilize toys in their room this school year as well.
Preschool students will have daily review of health and safety measures for hygiene purposes. They will also eat snack and lunch while being socially distanced.
Other areas to address for preschool can be found in this plan in the capacity and operational activity sections. Preschool students are always considered part of our student body and part of our school. Therefore, most of this established plan includes the preschool students.
Assessments
All testing for benchmarks is completed in 3rd grade. All new students who enter typically will receive assessment following a brief time period of schooling if the teacher notes difficulty areas for the student such as in math, reading comprehension or writing. If a student is found to need intervention or extra services, two options occur, either a referral to the home school the student resides in is made or if only slight areas of weakness are determined, extra work from school is provided. Extra work is considered remedial and is provided after school hours.
Due to the pandemic, we will attempt to complete testing early in the school year or prior to the students’ entry into school. This will allow the teachers to establish the placement for the student at the onset of school as well to alert of any difficulty areas to be aware of.
Grading
Christ the King Preparatory Academy will continue to use our current grading system. We will continue to use the homeschool curriculums we have which allows us to grade their work appropriately. Some work is graded on a satisfactory, still a need and unsatisfactory method for elementary students or for classes such as physical education, art and music.
Physical Education
Physical education will be conducted one time per week for the 2020-2021 school year and will be conducted outside (weather permitting) for as long as possible. We will not hold formal gym classes during the winter but will send students home with activities to increase physical activity. Gym class will resume in the late spring when classes can be held outdoors.
During physical education classes, 12 ft. distances shall be maintained in all directions and between individuals when participating in aerobic activities. Non-team activities will be conducted such as throwing, kicking, running and non-contact sports. Activities will also be non-sharing to not allow the touching of same equipment. No physical contact will be allowed.
Students who are enrolled in after school sports in the community, will be able to present the school with a form which will state the name of the activity and amount of time the student attends and participates in the activity. This can include activities such as swim lessons, dance class, gymnastics, golf class, etc.. These activities can be included as a physical activity. Family activities can also be included on these log sheets. Activities for families can include bicycle riding, hikes, nature walks, and winter sports.
Art/Music
Art class will be conducted one time per week during the school year. The art room will allow for students to be appropriately socially distanced. Students will be encouraged to use their own supplies and to keep them in a container marked with their name. During art activities which require use of school art supplies, they will be set aside after each class to be properly cleaned and disinfected following NYSDOH and CDC guidelines.
Students will follow the same protocol arriving to art as when walking to use the bathroom or to enter or leave the school. All safety protocols will be put in place and followed.
Music class will be conducted in another large room on a different day than art. Students will not use instruments this year unless they have an instrument from home and can keep it away from other students. Music class will include learning about music history, musicians, and sounds of instruments and about various genres.
Transportation
Christ the King Preparatory Academy does not provide our own bussing for students. We rely on parent and school district transportation.
To date, all students will be transported to school by parents/guardians. If a child should become eligible for bussing, the districts safety and health protocols will be followed. The child will follow health and safety protocols for this school upon arrival which will include non-touch temperature and must hand in a filled out and signed questionnaire by the parent/guardian. In addition, the parent/guardian of the child must text the director prior to putting their child on the bus for school.
Students attending BOCES or work-school programs will be transported by a parent, principal or designated individual who also has cleared the daily Covid-19 health screening.
Visitors/Volunteers
At times therapists, volunteers or visitors will enter the school building. They will have to follow the same protocol for Covid-19 screening as students and staff. Non-touch forehead temperatures will be taken and a questionnaire will have to be filled out. Due to the pandemic, all attempts will be made to limit visitors from entering the building while school is in session. This is to reduce the spreading of illness and to provide a safe environment for our staff and students.

RESTART OPERATIONS
In order to restart the 2020-2021 school year, practices and protocols will be set in place to allow for a safety and health for our students and staff. The following operations will be conducted and the principals shall oversee the staff and students to ensure these protocols are being followed.
Mandatory requirements
Emergency Drills: The director or principal of the school will hold mandatory fire and lock-down emergency drills. Fire drills will be held 10 per school year, providing a complete closing is required by the state. There will be an attempt to conduct more drills at the beginning of the school year to prepare for possible state wide shutdown due to Covid-19. Fire code inspection will be conducted in the fall of 2020, preferably when students are not in the building.

Health and Safety
Health/COVID-19 Screening:
Hygiene, Cleaning, and Disinfection:
Ventilation: teachers and/or principals will open windows in each classroom at least a crack for fresh air daily. If the air is too cold, the air purifier in each room will be used. The air purifier will be used throughout the day.
ATHLETICS AND EXTRA CURRICULARS
Christ The King Preparatory Academy does not currently hold extra-curricular activities such as sports, clubs, etc.. Our students depend on other outside activities separate from our school. Students will be reminded to use all safety and health protocols when they are attending after school events.
BEFORE AND AFTER CARE
Our school will provide before and after care for our students only as has always been our policy. This allows our parents who have to work, the opportunity to fill a whole work day or only slightly less without the risk of losing their employment. Before care will begin at 8:00 am and after care will be provided until 4:30 pm. Only 8 students will be able to participate in before or after school care. Homework or separate activities will be provided for the student to complete during this time. Students will have to stay in a main room where they can all be socially distanced properly. The same health and safety protocols will be in place as the regular school day including social distancing, mask use and hand sanitizing.
Staff members only will provide before and after care. Principals shall oversee the staff and students to ensure these protocols are being followed specifically.
VULNERABLE POPULATIONS
Staff, students or families who may have pre-existing situations which could make them vulnerable to COVID-19 will be encouraged to not attend or visit in-person school this year. Due to the fact that we are opening with an in-person model, we will be unable to accommodate families who need hybrid or remote learning at the beginning of the school year.
This is in effort to protect those individuals who may be vulnerable to contracting Covid-19
Health/COVID-19 Screening:
- Two weeks prior to school re-opening, parents/guardians will be requested to take the temperature of their child/children and report to the director of the school. Staff will also be requested to do the same. This will serve as a baseline temperature for each individual.
- Prior to reporting for school, the parent of every student must report via texting the director, their child’s current health status and temperature. They must be asymptomatic for Covid-19 prior to arrival. This also applies to all staff members.
- A daily remote health screening questionnaire must be completed prior to attending school each day, signed and handed in every morning before school starts. This applies for all staff and students prior to reporting to school. No individual will be able to enter the building without completing the questionnaire.
- Upon arrival on the first day of school and each day following, a non-touch forehead thermometer will be used to take the temperature of the student and staff member prior to entering the building which will be documented on each individual’s health screening sheet.
- A quick check sheet will be marked after the temperature is taken and the parent or older child is able to state they have no symptoms of Covid-19 or any other contagious illness.
- Any child or adult with a temperature greater than 100.0 degrees F will not be allowed entry into the building.
- Any individual experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms will not be able to enter the building until all symptoms are clear; they have been tested with a negative result and/or have been cleared by their physician with a signed note on the physician’s established paperwork. No handwritten notes on medically unmarked papers will be accepted.
Hygiene, Cleaning, and Disinfection:
- School wide training for staff and students will be conducted regarding the promotion and process of hand and respiratory hygiene among all individuals while in school and on school grounds. Students will be trained on the first day of arrival of school and staff will be trained prior to school. Training will include proper social distancing, hand washing procedures with soap and water, use of hand sanitizers, coughing into elbows with or without a mask.
- A cleaning log sheet will be provided for each staff member to check off and initial that the proper disinfecting has been done daily.
- The cleaning log will contain the date, time and scope of cleaning and disinfecting.
- Signs for proper handwashing will be placed in bathrooms.
- Alcohol based hand sanitizers will be placed at the entry ways, and in each room for frequent sanitizing. Students and staff should use sanitizer upon walking into the building.
- Cleaning and disinfecting will be completed in the following manner: surfaces wiped/washed down with NYSDOH and CDC approved cleaning supplies such as bleach and water. The frequency and method will be as per CDC and NYSDOH directives. The amount of cleaning product will be as per directions found on the product label.
- One time per week, hydrogen peroxide misting will be completed on all frequently touched surfaces.
- A UV light wand will be used over all frequently touched surfaces within the school building and in each individual classroom.
Ventilation: teachers and/or principals will open windows in each classroom at least a crack for fresh air daily. If the air is too cold, the air purifier in each room will be used. The air purifier will be used throughout the day.
